Karlene with her daughter, VanessaSee Nativity Sets

Karlene Koch Voepel of Voepel Studios started making her tiny Nativity sets in 1980 when her daughter was born. The first set consisted of only a donkey, sheep and the baby, Jesus. As the years went by, other animals were added and finally a stoneware stable with wood vigas and a kiva ladder. The first ladders were made by her little daughter when she was 5 years old. Today Karlene makes them from branches from the nearby woods. Her daughter, Vanessa, is now married and lives just down the street. Vanessa works in Sedona doing customer service and technical support for a company which sells educational materials.

Karlene finds the horse farms and historic archeological sites surrounding her home an inspiration for her "Horses of the Mountain" sculpture.

Sculpture is Karlene's main artistic passion, which she creates from clay flecked with tiny pieces of mica. The smoke clouds give the work an ancient look and found objects add interest & color. Her work is represented by galleries in Albuquerque, Durango and Sedona, just to mention a few. Karlene studied art at Stephens College and Washington University in Missouri.

Since Karlene spent 16 wonderful years in Socorro, New Mexico she has been painting petroglyphs on her handmade tiles to benefit the Socorro Public Library. New Mexico Tech, also in Socorro, and the University of New Mexico, Valencia Campus, also display some of her art pieces which were purchased by "1% for the Arts".
